Rodney MacDonald
A Visionary Leader of Cape Breton’s Cultural Scene
Honourable Rodney J. MacDonald is a highly accomplished recording artist, composer, and step dancer hailing from a family renowned for their traditional “Mabou Coal Mines” fiddle style, drive, compositions, and timing.
His musical journey began with the release of Dancer’s Delight, followed by Traditionally Rockin’, a collaboration with his cousin Dr. Glenn Graham. His contributions extend to notable compilations such as the Smithsonian release, The Beaton Family of Mabou: Cape Breton Fiddle and Piano Music, and the Celtic Traditional Lullabies From Our Cape Breton.
Beyond his musical endeavors, Rodney MacDonald, a former Premier of Nova Scotia, is a fervent advocate for Gaelic language and culture. Notably, he has established significant organizations such as the Nova Scotia Office of Gaelic Affairs and Cape Breton’s Kitchenfest! festival. Currently serving as the President of Colaisde na Gaidhlig / The Gaelic College and its satellite campus, Beinn Mhàbu, Rodney resides in Mabou, Cape Breton with his family, generously dedicating his time to various Boards and Charitable organizations.
