June Leaf, a world-renowned artist who divided her time between New York City and Cape Breton Island, has died at 94. Her passing marks the end of an era that saw two of the world's great artists put down stakes in Mabou, N.S., and build an alternative life there away from their other home on Bleecker Street in Manhattan.

The Gaelic College’s campus in Mabou has received a large donation from Port Hawkesbury area businessman Joe Shannon and his family. The family is contributing $1 million towards a number of initiatives at Beinn Mhabu. The funds will focus on student and program supports such as guest lecturers, field trips, classroom equipment and recruitment.

MABOU, N.S. — KitchenFest will be returning for the tenth year, beginning on Friday and continuing through to July 8. Over those nine days, events will take place across Cape Breton to promote and celebrate Gaelic music and culture. There will be over 100 ceilidhs and concerts, over 150 performers, at 33 different venues. Pub nights, square dances, and a play about the historic Glendale Concert are also part of the programming.

MABOU, N.S. — Sam Caldwell posted the fastest time to win the five-kilometre portion of the 41st annual Hugh Arnold Campbell Memorial Race last month in Mabou.
