Our History
Mabou's story is as captivating as its landscapes. Originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people, the name Mabou is thought to derive from a Mi'kmaq word meaning “place where two rivers meet” or “shining waters”, a fitting description for a village cradled by both river and sea.
The late 18th century saw Scottish settlers making Mabou their new home, weaving their Gaelic language, music, and traditions into the fabric of the community. This rich tapestry of cultures has bestowed Mabou with a unique identity, celebrated through our music, dance, and storytelling.
Throughout the years, Mabou has evolved while holding steadfast to its roots. The village has become synonymous with cultural preservation, especially of its rich heritage, evident in our festivals, educational institutions, and daily life.
Today, Mabou continues to thrive as a community deeply connected to its history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where the past and present dance together, creating a harmonious rhythm that resonates with all who visit.
